Heartbreak in Toppenish: Bulldogs’ Late Rally Falls Just Short in Five-Goal Thriller
TOPPENISH, WA — In a match that saw more action in the final seven minutes than most see in a full 80, the Ellensburg Bulldogs soccer team fell in a 3–2 heartbreaker to the Toppenish Wildcats on Tuesday, April 14. Despite a furious two-minute rally that saw Ellensburg erase a multi-goal deficit, a late Wildcats strike proved to be the difference.
Wildcats Take Control Early
The first hour of play belonged to Toppenish. The Wildcats broke a defensive stalemate in the 36th minute when Kristian Iniquez found the back of the net, giving the home side a 1–0 lead at the half. Toppenish doubled their advantage in the 60th minute behind a goal from Luis Ramos, leaving the Bulldogs with a steep mountain to climb heading into the final stretch.
The Two-Minute Blitz
Refusing to go quietly, Ellensburg’s offense exploded late in the second half. In the 73rd minute, the prolific duo of Alejandro Jasso and Angel Aparicio connected yet again, with Jasso assisting Aparicio to bring the score to 2–1.
Just two minutes later (75:00), the Bulldogs found the equalizer. Alejandro Jasso buried a shot off a well-placed assist from Rodrigo Arias, knotting the game at 2–2 and stunning the Toppenish crowd. The rapid-fire goals seemed to have shifted all momentum toward Ellensburg for an improbable comeback victory.
A Late Sting
The celebration was short-lived, however. In the 77th minute—only two minutes after the Bulldogs had equalized—Toppenish’s Kristian Iniquez struck again for his second goal of the night. The late brace from Iniquez reclaimed the lead for the Wildcats and ultimately sealed the 3–2 result.
Rhys Kamin was once again a standout in goal for the Bulldogs, recording 10 saves to keep Ellensburg within striking distance throughout the high-pressure contest.
