Ellensburg Wrestling Caps Breakthrough Season at Mat Classic XXXVII, Eyes Bright Future

TACOMA, Wash. — The hardware was significant. The message may have been even louder.

Ellensburg’s boys wrestling team, fresh off a league championship and with head coach Marc Eylar earning league Coach of the Year honors, closed out its season at Mat Classic XXXVII with multiple podium finishes and a clear signal that the program’s momentum is only building.

Behind a runner-up finish from Cash Eylar at 132 pounds, a third-place medal from heavyweight Silas Stewman and a sixth-place effort from 106-pounder Kyler Mays, the Bulldogs showed they can compete deep into Saturday night at the Tacoma Dome — and they’ll bring back much of that firepower next winter.

Boys: Bulldogs Deliver on Big Stage

Eylar’s run at 132 pounds anchored the weekend. The junior stormed into the championship match with four straight victories — three by fall — including a 7-4 semifinal decision over Othello’s Daniel Gonzalez. In the final, Eylar fell to Ridgefield’s undefeated Jonas DesRochers, but his second-place finish and 26 team points underscored his place among the state’s elite.

At 285, Stewman bounced back from a quarterfinal loss in emphatic fashion. The senior powered through the consolation bracket with four wins — three by fall — before avenging an earlier defeat to Ridgefield’s Eddie Chamberlain with a pin in 1:42 to claim third place. He, too, scored 26 team points.

Mays added to Ellensburg’s medal haul at 106, navigating the backside of the bracket with grit. After a quarterfinal setback, Mays won two elimination matches, including a fall in 57 seconds over Selah’s Cash Burton, before placing sixth in a narrow 1-0 fifth-place match loss.

Wyatt Green (150) also reached the podium, finishing seventh with four wins — three by fall — during his run through consolations. His performance added 15 team points and showcased the Bulldogs’ depth.

While several others did not place, they contributed to the team’s competitive showing. Heavyweight Samuel Henderson recorded two falls in the consolation rounds. Sealy Graham (190) earned two victories, including a first-round pin. Peyton Disch (132), Lane Magruder (144), Wyatt Winston (144), Cash Calhoun (190) and Wyatt Jenks (215) each picked up wins on the state’s biggest stage.

For a team that captured its league title and saw Eylar recognized as Coach of the Year, the state tournament performance reinforced the Bulldogs’ identity: physical, resilient and increasingly dangerous in March.

Girls: Foundation Continues to Strengthen

Ellensburg’s girls program mirrored that trajectory, with multiple wrestlers advancing deep into consolation brackets and scoring valuable team points.

At 145, Karsyn Green led the way with a 10-point weekend. She opened with a dominant major decision and a fall to reach the quarterfinals before adding another pin in consolations.

Keetin Daugherty (115) battled back after a narrow 7-6 second-round loss, earning a 49-second fall in consolations to finish with three team points. Darla Perry (155) and Norah Joyce (170) each secured two victories — both notching falls — while combining for 14 team points.

Chloe Stewart (125) competed hard but did not place.

Though none of the girls reached the podium, the collective progress — and experience gained — points toward continued upward movement for the program.

A Program on the Rise

Taken together, the Bulldogs’ results reflect more than individual achievement. With league championship honors on the boys side, a Coach of the Year at the helm and a roster stacked with underclassmen contributors, Ellensburg enters the offseason with both credibility and continuity.

Mays, Eylar and Green headline a core expected to return, while the girls squad continues to add depth and postseason experience.

At Mat Classic XXXVII, Ellensburg proved it belongs in the conversation. The next step may be staying there — and climbing even higher.
